ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Sardar Bhagat Singh Government Post Graduate College, Rudrapur (Udham Singh Nagar) Uttarakhand was established on 10 October, 1974 with 35 acres of land (now approx. 28 acres). It was affiliated to Kumaon University. The college is situated at Fazalpur Mehraula, Nainital Road, Rudrapur (Udham Singh Nagar) located on national highway 9. It was started with few subjects of Arts faculty in 1974 and Science with B.Sc. Physics, Zoology, Botany, Maths and Chemistry in 1997. M.Sc. with Physics and Chemistry was started in 2015, M.Sc. with Botany, Zoology and Mathematics was started in 2022. Vocational studies under Deen Dayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendra (DDUKK) was started in 2015-16, under U.G.C. scheme, but now it is under self finance mode. B.Ed. Classes (under self finance scheme) were started in 2008-09. U.G. and P.G in Commerce was started in 1981 & 1988, respectively. For vocational/professional courses, Distance education study centers of UOU & IGNOU were started in 2010 and 2016 respectively. Professional diploma courses in Ecotourism, Sales Management and Interior Decoration courses were started in 2004-05 under self finance mode. After declaration of Uttarakhand state in order to bring qualitative and applied reforms in Higher Education, the college was recognized as Model College in 2005-06. At present college has three faculties namely Arts, Science and Commerce. Besides these, the Department of Education and BBA are being run on self-finance mode. There are 18 departments at U.G. and 13 departments at P.G. level. The college has a Sports ground of approximately 201330 square feet area. The college has Volleyball, Drop-row ball, Sepak Takra, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Mini Golf, Kho-Kho, Football, hand ball and Cricket Courts. Once a year Inter Collegiate University competition in one of the above stated sports activity is held in the college along with the Annual Sports Function. The students participate in different State and National Level sports competition. The institution is recognized under section 2(f) &12(B) since 1976 and 1977 respectively of UGC Act 1956.

The college has been instrumental in bringing about educational, social, and cultural awareness among the students and resolving their education-related issues and problems. During Covid-19 Pandemic class room teaching was not possible so our dedicated teachers started teaching on various platforms like Google meet/webexMeet/Google Classroom/Zoom and WhattsApp groups and provided E-Contents in form of notes, E-Videos, which ensured to provide quality education to students by using the minimal available resources, due to their strenuous work the college became the first E-repository of classroom notes and E-Videos. As a result about 1000 E-contents are loaded in the E-Content folder of our college Website. As an innovative initiative, the chemistry department of our college has developed a Virtual Lab, in Chemistry which is the first effort of this kind in Uttarakhand State. The Teachers of this college have been instrumental about the social, educational, and cultural development of the region since its inception. A distinguishing feature of this college is the Center for Tarai Research Education and Development (C-TREAD) which is dedicated to the Holistic Development of Tarai Area of Uttarakhand. This college is determined for character formation, and all round development of the student’s personalities through platform like Sports, NCC, NSS, Rovers Rangers and Health and Happiness Club.

The training in negotiating the obstacles by NCC cadets is a very important aspect of NCC curriculum. The obstacle course training not only makes the cadets physically tough but develops a very high degree of confidence and inculcates the qualities of patience and courage to face challenges. It helps the cadets in developing and promoting physical fitness, self confidence, determination and quick reflexes. For this purpose 10 obstacles were set up in college. Range firing is an important and compulsory training for all the NCC cadets. This is done so that the fear of firearms can be removed from the minds of the cadets. The art of shooting teaches precision, accuracy, co-ordination of body movements and confidence which helps to make a better person in public. Firing practice of NCC cadets is conducted in college at regular intervals. The college has established the Tejaswani Group to address various issues related to health, hygiene education, nutrition and personal problems of female students. Another goal is to motivate students for employment-based and professional education through Skill Development Cell. The college also keeps trying to provide forum for students to sprout and nurture their intrinsic and acquired talents through extra-curricular activities and the Science Popularization cell. Some of the Faculty members are research guides and are also involved in minor/major research projects funded by UGC and other agencies.

Our college is governed and managed by the Uttarakhand Government. The Directorate, Higher Education provides funds for Purchase and Maintenance of Academic and non academic facilities of the college. During the academic year the physical facilities of the college includes 24 classrooms, 03 computer lab, library building, B.B.A., B.Ed. building, one boy’s hostel, Principal’s and Hostel Warden’s accommodation is also available in the college. The college also has 04 classrooms with ICT techniques through which teachers are able to impart their lectures in a concise and precise manner. The library is updated timely with new books as per the changes in the syllabus. Under the RUSA scheme books and equipments were purchased. A Garden of Herbal and Aromatic plants has also been developed in the college premises to spread awareness in students about various traditional herbal and aromatic plants. A new commerce block of 35 rooms is under construction funded by Minority Board.
